From the Latin "smaragdus" and the Persian "zamarat" meaning "heart of stone" the emerald is a precious stone.
The etymology of the word emerald is uncertain. For Littré, the word comes from Sanskrit. Others say it is of Persian origin. By distortion, these terms would have given rise to the Latin word smaragdus, which means "heart of stone". Emeralds have been known since ancient times. Five thousand years ago, the Egyptians extracted them from their emerald mines to fashion jewels for the aristocracy. The deposit at Jebel Zabarah, found in 1816, probably only contained stones of little value. Also called "Cleopatra's mines" because of the fascination that the famous Egyptian queen had with emeralds.
The Emerald is said to contribute to relationship harmony within the family, friends and between lovers. Favorable to friendship, it develops feelings of righteousness and understanding. Emeralds also bring a great inner calm and sooth passions. It encourages benevolence and openness to others. It therefore stimulates a taste for cooperation and working together. Emeralds also contribute to the resolution of old conflicts and help people suffering from claustrophobic disorders. Known as the stone of knowledge, emeralds are said to encourage learning and sharpen memory.
Emerald helps to strengthen the immune system and therefore plays a significant role in treatments. Its soothing action on the digestive system is also recognized. The emerald stone can also help cleanse the liver and pancreas. The power of this stone can also be seen in its action on sight disorders.
