Many legends surround Onyx. According to Greek mythology, the name comes from Aphrodite and her son Cupid. Cupid took advantage of an afternoon when Aphrodite was sleeping by a river to come and cut and steal her nails. But what comes from the Gods and Goddesses cannot be corrupted. He flew to Olympus, but his booty fell into the hands of the Moirai, or Fates who decided to transform these nail clippings into fine stones, called Onyx. 

The term Onyx comes from the Greek word "onux" which means nail. In ancient times, all chalcedony stones were called Onyx. Chalcedony stones are light in color, like nails.

Onyx is a fine stone, a sub-variety of the chalcedony family and is made of silicon. Its hardness that makes it easy to work and care for means it is frequently used in jewelry-making.

Its name comes from the Greek "Onyx" meaning "nail or claw". This may be a reference to flesh-colored onyx that resembles a nail.
